Get ready to embark on a career-defining experience! This position offers a rare opportunity to engage closely with Northern communities and produce compelling, original digital storytelling.

ICI Radio-Canada Grand Nord is seeking an experienced, cross-platform videojournalist for our Whitehorse station in Yukon. The working language is French. The office is located inside the CBC North building in Whitehorse. You bring an understanding of the unique challenges of the Far North, demonstrating strong resilience.

In this role, you will cover territorial news, current affairs and the issues that matter most to the residents of Canada’s Far North. You will report on a wide range of stories, spanning the environment, the economy, politics, social and Indigenous issues, and the local French-speaking community. You will work daily with your colleagues based in Iqaluit and Yellowknife, and collaborate closely with CBC North on newsgathering.

You must be willing to travel across the territory and file for all editorial platforms, with a primary focus on writing online articles and creating a variety of digital content, including vertical videos. You will pitch, research, write and present reports for our newscasts, web pages and social media accounts, as well as Radio-Canada’s interregional and national programming.

The successful candidate is a creative thinker who excels at generating ideas, thrives on breaking news and loves diving into original or developing stories. You bring extensive experience as a field reporter or videojournalist, along with deep knowledge of federal and territorial politics. You must also be prepared to work under demanding winter conditions.

Key Tasks:

  • Attend daily assignment meetings.
  • Develop and maintain a network of local contacts.
  • Pitch and develop original story ideas.
  • Write online articles and produce digital video content.
  • Build strong relationships with the CBC North team and local communities.
  • Research and gather information on territorial issues and events.
  • Arrange and conduct interviews.

In addition to possessing the qualifications below, the ideal person may also be a cross-platform reporter willing to be trained as a videojournalist!

This role requires full-time on-site presence.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a university degree plus three (3) years’ practical, relevant experience in the field.
  • Excellent writing, storytelling and interviewing skills on both digital and broadcast media.
  • Comfort with live reporting.
  • Solid command of French (oral and written comprehension and communication) and strong proficiency in English (oral comprehension and communication).
  • Knowledge of the Far North, OLMCs, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, Canadian politics and related issues is an asset.
  • High degree of cultural and historical sensitivity toward the Yukon.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies.

  • Experience working on multiple stories simultaneously.
  • Understanding of the public broadcaster’s role and responsibilities.
  • Experience as a videojournalist is an asset.
