The Currency Department helps ensure that Canadians continue to have confidence in, and access to, bank notes. Within Currency Policy and Research (CPR), we conduct research and policy analysis on cash use, payment behaviour, payment and cash system developments, financial inclusion and other issues affecting the future role of cash in Canada.
Our work combines survey design, applied microeconomic analysis, policy development, stakeholder engagement and publishable research to provide evidence-based advice to Bank management and external partners. This work supports flagship initiatives including the Methods-of-Payment Survey (MOP), the Cost of Payments Study and broader research on cash usage and payment choice in Canada.
What you will do
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Currency Policy and Research, you will contribute to the Bank's research and policy work relating to cash, payments and consumer payment behaviour.

What you need to succeed
To succeed in this role, you will bring significant experience conducting applied economic research, including analyzing survey data or microdata and applying econometric and statistical methods to policy or research questions. You will be comfortable translating complex data and research findings into clear, high-quality analytical products for senior decision makers.
You will also have strong quantitative and econometric skills, along with proficiency using statistical software and data-analysis tools. Strong writing, presentation and communication skills will be important, as you will be expected to explain complex analytical findings clearly to a range of audiences.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, analytical thinking and initiative, while working collaboratively and building strong relationships across multidisciplinary teams. You will be results-oriented and able to influence through clear, evidence-based communication.

Your education and experience
The position requires a PhD in Economics, Econometrics, Finance, or a related quantitative discipline or a master’s degree with four years of relevant experience.

Language requirement
The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French. Although the position language requirement is English or French essential, we do encourage everyone to improve their second language proficiency for future career growth and to contribute towards fostering a bilingual environment.

The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a portion of each month as part of the Bank’s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of 12 days per month to help build connections between colleagues. You must live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
